5 Low Cost Organization Tips for Your Warehouse

October 6, 2018 By Joshua Morrison Leave a Comment

The importance of warehouse organization is something many business owners underestimate. When your warehouse is organized and running efficiently, it can make all the difference when it comes to your profit margin. However, this doesn’t have to mean a massive investment, as there are many low cost solutions, which you can easily implement right away.

  1. Use Wire Containers For Small Items
Organization of smaller items presents a challenge for many warehouse spaces. Small items getting lost can end up costing a significant amount in the long term, and even if items are found later, it’s important to keep your inventory consistently accurate. This means investing a small amount in storage solutions now can save you a great deal of money in the future. One great idea is wire containers, which can be used to store a wide variety of items but can also break down easily and stored when not needed.
  2. Make Sure Your Warehouse Is Clutter Free
Making sure your warehouse remains well organized and free of clutter is an absolute must. Ensure that your warehouse employees each have a designated area of responsibility that they need to clean on a daily basis. This will make it easier to find items in your warehouse, which will increase efficiency, as well as ensure a safer working environment.
  3. Organize Your Shipping Area
Keeping your shipping area neat is an absolute must for any warehouse. However, many warehouse managers are tempted to hoard as many boxes as possible so they will have a perfectly sized box for whatever item needs to be shipped. While this may seem like a smart idea at first, you will end up with a cluttered space very quickly. Instead, decide on a few sizes that will cover your needs and stock them, as you need them. Not only will this save space, but your shipping employees will be more productive as they will spend less time choosing shipping boxes.
  4. Safety First
Going over safety protocols with warehouse employees may seem tedious, but is essential if you want to prevent accidents later on. Many safety precautions may seem like common sense, but when your employees are in a rush to get the job done, accidents can happen. A low cost idea is to hang safety posters in your warehouse and break areas. This is a small investment that can save you from worker accidents later on.
  5. Floor plans, Labels, And Signage
Making an investment in labels and signage is absolutely essential if you want an organized and well-run warehouse. Coming up with a map or floor plan where products are organized into sections is a great way to ensure that items can be found as quickly as possible and traffic moves efficiently. An intuitive system that is both readable and capable of being adapted to meet your changing needs can make the difference between an efficiently run warehouse and a disorganized mess. When investing in labels, make sure you implement bar coding for all products being stored. This makes inventory control a breeze and keeps wasted time finding the right item to a minimum.Taking the time now to make sure your warehouse is as organized as possible will save you a great deal of time and energy in the long run.

5 Reasons to Use Plastic Bins With Portable Storage Containers

August 25, 2018 By Joshua Morrison Leave a Comment

With each season comes changing weather, and for many people it is a time to move to a new house or handle a home renovation. When needing to move personal items, it is important to use the right tools – especially if you need to store things for quite a while.

Finding the best way to pack some personal items into a portable storage unit can be harder than it seems. Some common items people use for storage are: garbage bags, cardboard boxes, and moving blankets.

The best option will depend on the size of the item, its purpose, and how long you plan on storing your possessions in your portable storage unit. If you are looking for a solution that will hold up long term, you should look into plastic storage containers. These versatile vessels are ideal for storing personal items safely and efficiently. Here are five reasons why.

1. They’re Easy to Organize

One of the hardest parts of storing personal items is getting things correctly sorted. With storage containers, you simply pack everything into various containers separated by item type, or room in the house. Once you have done that you can add a label to the outside or write on the lid with permanent marker to help you locate items easier later on.

2. They Keep Pests Out

Some items, like clothing, are target to pests like moths. Anything with real cotton or wool fibers is likely to be attacked by insects, so a plastic storage container is a big help for keeping moths and other troublemakers out of the way without smelly mothballs or dangerous chemicals.

3. They Keep Personal items Clean & Dry

If you don’t need to use a portable storage unit and are looking to store items in your attic or garage, you may encounter a lot of dust or moist conditions leading to additional cleanup work when you get personal items back out. Plastic containers keep everything dry and clean no matter what may be going on outside them.

4. They Stack!

Bags and boxes may seem like great storage, but when it comes time to stack them, they can be tough to handle. Boxes can weaken and collapse, and bags simply don’t stack well all. Plastic storage tubs nest neatly together, and they come in many sizes that will allow you to maximize use of your portable storage unit.

5. They Will Last

While we’re talking boxes and bags, remember that cardboard and plastic may rip or degrade, with time and environmental factors. Plastic containers will tolerate that abuse for many years, making them a good investment for several years of use whether you are storing clothes, knick-knacks, or other personal items.

Sometimes a home renovation or a move can become much easier with the right tools. Instead of fighting with boxes and bags next time, you will find plastic storage containers to be a durable, clean, organized way to store your personal items while moving.

5 Tips for Maintaining an Asphalt Parking Lot

August 19, 2018 By Joshua Morrison Leave a Comment

Whether you have an asphalt driveway or parking lot, maintenance plays a heavy role in making sure that it doesn’t rot away or erode over time. Asphalt can be a convenient, easy, and cheaper method of paving a designated area. With those benefits, however, comes necessary steps you need to take to make sure that you get the most of it that you can. Here are five of them.

1. Sweeping

Something as simple as regularly having your asphalt swept can be a huge deciding factor for how long your asphalt lot lasts. For one, not only does it keep the area clean–something those using your lot will appreciate–but it also helps to keep the drainage systems clear. If those drainage systems are clogged because of debris left on the lot, then water is going to end up standing still on the lot. Water does not like asphalt. So, to prevent the deterioration from occurring, have your lot swept regularly.

2. Install Drainage

As briefly mentioned before, you’re going to need drainage systems throughout your lot to ensure the removal of water. Unless your asphalt is covered by a roof, at some point, rain is going to come down and start to eat away at your lot. Your best defense against that is to have a drainage system that can remove the water and send it along its way.

3. Deal With Cracks

While you’re inspecting your lot for any debris or trash that needs to be removed, keep an eye out for cracks. While small cracks may seem like nothing, they are the starting point of a much larger problem. Have them sealed up or sanded down as soon as you can, so they don’t widen further and cause even more problems. You may also want to keep an eye on where the cracks are forming to see if you need another drain in the area.

4. Remove Oil

Similar to water, oil also does not like asphalt. With cars parking on your lot, it is inevitable that one of the cars will have an oil leak. Even a slight oil leak can be enough over time to erode the asphalt away. You should have the lot cleaned as much as you can before they play wreak too much havoc on your asphalt.

5. Seal It

Finally, one of the best methods you can utilize to make sure your asphalt remains in top shape and durable for years is to seal it. The recommended amount for a seal coat is every two years. However, if your lot sees a lot of action, then you should seal it more often.

How DNA Replication Works

August 7, 2018 By Joshua Morrison Leave a Comment

Either for school or your own curiosity, you may wonder exactly how DNA replicates itself. DNA replication is essentially the process by which DNA copies itself to form another cell. This is something that is occurring all of the time in your body at incredible speeds. There are three main steps.

1. Initiation

Replication of DNA begins at the site of origin called “oriC.” It is here that initiator proteins bind to the origin and cause the DNA strands to unwind. This is performed by an enzyme known as helicase. Other proteins keep the two strands from winding themselves together again. In order to move to the next step of replication, the cell creates RNA primers which are a starting point for the next step.

2. Elongation

As mentioned before, the RNA primer is used as a starting point for the leading strand. The strand itself acts as a template for the new DNA strand. There are four nucleotide bases in DNA–A, T, G, C. They have specific pairing rules. A only binds with T. G only binds with C, except for certain cases. These all possess genetic information when combined. Let’s say the template strand has the following bases in this order: AGTC. Then the new strand that is created from the template strand is: TCAG. The DNA Polymerase is the molecule responsible for running down the template strand and adding the new bases. The same polymerase is also responsible for proofreading to ensure that every base is connected properly.

This is all performed for the leading strand. The lagging strand is a bit different. Instead of one long and continuous strand, the lagging strand is actually cut up into different pieces which are later all connected. These fragments are Okazaki fragments.

Once all the bases have been added, the primers are removed, additional bases are placed into the gaps, and the DNA strand proceeds to the final step of replication.

3. Termination

With the proofreading finished and all of the fragments joined together, DNA ligase seals the two sequences and you have yourself two continuous double strands. You are left with a brand new DNA strand that contains one old strand and one brand new strand. The DNA winds back up into the familiar double helix shape, and the cell has its genetic information intact.

One last interesting feature of termination is the role of telomerase. This molecule is responsible for ensuring that the strand doesn’t shorten prematurely. It adds on additional bases to prevent this. Because shortening strands have been linked to aging, telomerase’s role in DNA replication has been suggested to help with anti-aging in humans. A cure for aging?

5 Items You Should Laminate This School Year

August 1, 2018 By Joshua Morrison Leave a Comment

With school starting, you may be eager to see your child head off to either begin their education or continue it. As a proud parent, it’s understandable that you want to show off your child’s merits. Just where does the line exist, however, between pride and boasting? Here are five ideas of items that you may choose to laminate to commemorate your child’s school year.

1. School Photo

While your child may dread the annual school photo, they’re going to love it when they grow up and leave the house. You’re going to love it, too. So, when you receive that order form to buy your photos, make sure you order one that’s fit for a place on the wall. Then just hope that your child takes the photo seriously. Or, if not, enjoy the resulting laughter for years.

2. Good Grades

A method to encourage your child to receive good grades and study hard is to keep their grades in a public space. By seeing them daily, it will motivate them to continue to study hard and perform well in school. Obviously, doing well in school will only help their future when it’s time to apply for colleges and universities. For now, however, have those good grades take a place of honor on the wall. You may even choose to use it as a reward system.

3. Letter To The Future

At some point, most children are required to write a letter to their future selves. It’s going to be adorable. Whether they receive that letter that day or it’s given to them when they graduate, be sure to keep it. Not only will it serve as a token of their youth and innocence, but it might just motivate them during their college years.

4. Field Trip Photos

Field trips are a staple of a child’s education. Even if you can’t chaperone them and share the experience with your child, you can have someone take photos. Place those photos on the wall as a talking point of your child’s adventures. Laminating them, too, will ensure that they last a long time.

5. Teacher Comments

Whether it’s on a graded piece of paper, a written letter from Parent-Teacher conferences, or something else, if you receive a glowing review from a teacher about your child, you be sure to memorialize that and place it on the wall. Your child can draw encouragement and motivation from seeing those comments from a respected authoritative figure. And when you have guests over you can show off just a little bit about how much the teacher enjoys your child in the classroom. Harmless spotlighting there.

4 Great Reasons to Have a Prepaid Phone

July 29, 2018 By Joshua Morrison Leave a Comment

Prepaid phones sell in incredible volumes. Traditional phone service deals are far more popular. Cell phone users generally prefer to purchase a high-end smartphone. Afterward, they sign up for monthly service with a cellular service provider. Scores of good reasons exist for following this conventional approach. Do not dismiss the value of buying a prepaid cell phone though.

Prepaid cell phones deliver an inexpensive device along providing calls, text, and internet for a flat fee. Paying the fee in advance activates the phone.

While an excellent deal, some may still wonder what reason exists to purchase one. After all, the traditional cell phone deal seems to work fine. Four solid reasons reveal why buying a prepaid phone makes sense.

1.) A Prepaid Phone Provides a Backup

No matter how careful you are, cell phones get lost. Sometimes, people leave them in their pants pockets when doing laundry. Phones end up destroyed that way. When something awful happens to a primary phone, wouldn’t access to a secondary backup be a good thing? A prepaid phone presents an inexpensive way to send or receive calls when you lose access to your primary phone. Keep a prepaid phone in a desk or car glove compartment just in case.

2.) Gain a Secondary Phone for Business Purposes

If you perform side jobs or engage in freelance work, you need to give out a number people can call. Unfortunately, you open yourself up for unwanted nuisance calls when giving out a phone number. Rather than allow people to annoy you on your main number, give out a prepaid phone number instead. If too many troubling calls arrive on the prepaid phone, don’t worry. Changing the number on it won’t come with the difficulties changing your main one does.

3.) Prepaid Cells Prove Reliable

Modern prepaid cell phones work quite well on 3G and 4G networks. Top networks offer services compatible with the phone. Locked phones only work with a particular provider, but these types of phones aren’t the only ones available. Unlocked phones capable of working with any network provider can be selected as well. Cellular service on both kinds of phones should be excellent.

4.) No Contracts or Credit Checks

Why deal with the hassle of applying for phone service and end up declined over an old bad mark on a credit score? Why sign up for a two-year contract and accept the obligation to pay 24 months worth of fees. A prepaid phone comes with neither credit checks nor contracts. No one gets turned down for month-to-month service. When you don’t want to use the phone anymore, don’t add more money to “load” the account. You can’t ask for anything easier.

6 Unique Workouts You Have To Try

July 22, 2018 By Joshua Morrison Leave a Comment

Want to change up your workouts? Check out these six unique ones that you have to try.

1. Barre

Barre incorporates small movements, inspired by yoga, Pilates and ballet, to strengthen your muscles and tone your body. A barre, like with ballet, is used to help with posture and balance. This workout shows that small exercises can make a big difference. For best results, do barre workouts 3 to 4 times a week.

Best for: Those who like a low impact, high intensity workout

2. Spinning

Spinning is such an effective workout that it only needs to be done for 20 to 30 minutes at a time to make an impact. Spinning on a bike at a high intensity is mixed with low-impact cycling. Move to some of your favorite songs, and burn some fat while you are at it. If you already spin regularly, and want a twist on your go-to routine, try aqua spinning. This involves moving in the water, on and off the bike. The water creates some resistance, and is a more intense way to do the workout you love. Plus, the water keeps you cool in the warm months, making it popular for summer.

Best for: Biking and cycling enthusiasts; people who like elliptical training and stair climbers, but want something different

3. Bootcamp

Do you like to do a mix of different exercises? Try bootcamp, which combines interval and resistance training. Short, high-intensity periods are mixed with plenty of time to rest. This workout provides a balance of strength and cardio, provided you have proper form. Ask an instructor to help you determine which moves are right for you.

Best for: Those who want to get in shape fast; former student-athletes; PTs and athletic trainers

4. Aerial Silks

If you think using aerial silks is just for circus performers, think again. Using them not only makes users feel like they are flying, but conditioning exercises help your core and arm strength, stamina and tone your body overall.

Best for: Enhancing your upper body; dancers or gymnasts

5. Hooping

Hoops are not only for kids. When doing a hooping routine, heavier hoops, piled around a user, are swung in circles to music. Class attendees follow an instructor’s moves, and end up feeling exhausted in no time.

Best for: Kids at heart; former dancers

6. At-Home and On-Demand Workouts

Life gets busy and stressful. With at-home and on-demand workouts, you can bring fitness-class worthy routines to your house. Try prerecorded cardio, strength, spinning, barre, dance or toning routines, whatever you feel like.

Best for: Busy people

Incorporate these workouts into your routine for more variety in your fitness regimen. What are you waiting for? Get moving!

8 Things to Know Before Owning a Restaurant Franchise

July 20, 2018 By Joshua Morrison Leave a Comment

The restaurant business can be a place where you can really make a great deal of money. While you have to work hard and long hours, it can pay off big in the end. Owning a restaurant franchise can be a great way to go about opening your own restaurant. However, there are things you should know before starting this endeavor. Here are eight things to know before owning a restaurant franchise.

Understand that a franchise will take up the majority of your time

If you are planning on working on your golf game or spending a lot of extra time with your family after you are the owner of a restaurant franchise, think again. These types of franchises will end up taking a lot of your time.

Restaurant franchises cost a great deal of money

In most cases, if you want to own a major restaurant franchise, you are going to have to have a net worth of at least a million dollars. There are also many fees involved with owning one of these franchises

How reliable is the franchise you are choosing

You must make sure that the franchise you are choosing is a reliable one. If you purchase a franchise that is ready to go bankrupt, your business could fail. Do a lot of research before you purchase your franchise.

Are you willing to stay in one place for the next few decades

If you are the type of person that likes to move around a lot, this is probably not the opportunity for you. A franchise requires you to stay in one place and make sure everything is running smoothly. It is a lot harder to just up and move when you are a franchise owner.

Is your territory right for this franchise

In certain areas, certain franchises do well. You need to make sure that your territory is right for the franchise you are looking to own.

Do you have previous restaurant experience

When you are applying to own a franchise, many of the parent companies want to see that you have previous experience in the restaurant business. This is a key part of being a successful restaurant franchise owner.

You must follow the rules

It is important that you remember to always follow the rules when you are owning a franchise. If you do not adhere to the rules that are set in place, you may be in for a troublesome experience.

You usually aren’t allowed to try out new foods

If you have a lot of new recipes that you want to try out, a franchise is not the place for you. It is important to stick to the menu and recreate the experience that is in all of the other locations.

7 Common Misconceptions About Working as a Lawyer

July 12, 2018 By Joshua Morrison Leave a Comment

The field of law is one of the most sought after career fields in existence. According to the American Bar Association, more law students are becoming lawyers than ever before in the history of the United States. Becoming an attorney can result in high pay and much prestige. However, many people who wish to become lawyers may hold significant misconceptions about the profession. Below are seven you should be aware of.

Being an Attorney Is Always Glamorous and Exciting

Thanks to TV shows about lawyers like Perry Mason, people tend to conceptualize the profession of law as something that is inherently exciting for even glamorous. This isn’t true in most cases. There is a ton of reading, studying, drafting and filing of legal documentation required. As Forbes reported, most civil cases don’t even go to court.

Law Work Is Always Intellectually Stimulating

While practicing certain kinds of law requires a robust intellect and constant learning, this does not hold true for a good portion of the work lawyers perform. Newer lawyers especially may work in a law firm and be tasked with very boring and mundane work such as document review.

Being a Good Debater Makes You a Good Lawyer

Some people may be convinced they could become excellent lawyers because of their ability to sway their friends and colleagues during informal debates and arguments. However, real legal arguments are more strongly tethered to logic, research and what the legal code says than simple informal debates are.

Lawyers Are Social Justice Warriors that Change Society

Due to watching lawyers on cable news programs, some naive individuals may think that the law is a good avenue for activism to bring about social change. Instead, lawyers have to work within the legal code that exists. While you may be able to represent clients that need help, you won’t be changing much of anything in the larger scheme of things.

Being a Lawyer Means Instant Riches

Many lawyers are in upper income brackets, but not all lawyers are. The highest paid lawyers tend to work for the highest paying law firms. Most attorneys, however, will not meet the stringent qualifications to get hired by such a firm.

People Hate Lawyers

The impression that lawyers have a negative reputation in modern society is extremely overblown and again mostly fueled by television. The real truth is that most people need legal work at different points in their lives and have developed positive relationships with lawyers. This will help to raise your standing within your community.

Becoming a Lawyer Is Too Difficult

It is true that graduating from law school and passing the bar exam is exceedingly difficult. It’s not something for the lazy. Still, plenty of hard working individuals with drive manage to obtain their law licenses every year.
