Moving is truly a stressful time for anyone. It’s even more so when you are moving across the country. However, more stressful still is when you have pets and have to move with them. There are many things you have to think about and do to prepare your pet for such a move, no matter what its species. Here are the best tips for how to move with across the country with your pets.

Whether you have a dog, cat or even a bird, it is important to take them in for a checkup at the vet. This will ensure that your pet is up to date with their vaccinations and any underlying health conditions can be detected and treated before your trip. You want to ensure that your pet is at their absolute best health because the move will definitely be a stressful situation.

Another good reason to take your pet to the vet is because your vet can provide an interstate health certificate, something that is necessary when you plan on transporting pets across state lines.

You will want to stay fully stocked on supplies. No matter what kind of pet you have, it’s absolutely essential to have a good amount of food and water on hand during your move across the country. Bringing your own brand of food that your pet is used to is a wise move, as you may not find the same brand at stores during your travels. This helps to avoid the unpleasant situation of your dog or cat suffering from an upset stomach.

If your pets are birds, be sure to have them in the appropriate travel cages or carriers. Birds also tend to get more easily stressed than other animals, so be sure to keep them covered during the move to minimize their fright. Keep their cage or carrier securely in the seat with a seatbelt in place tightly around it. If your bird enjoys a certain type of music if you are driving across the country, play it, but don’t blast it.

Plan for multiple breaks for your dogs to relieve themselves and to stretch their legs. Your pet has the same needs as you and needs to stretch and go to the bathroom just like you do. Your cat is trickier, but you should have a harness, not just a collar and leash for your feline friend. It may be difficult getting cats to relieve themselves while traveling. If you are driving cross-country, however, you will want to plan to stay at hotels during the night. Many are pet friendly, so you and your pets will be able to relax.

Your dogs and cats should have updated ID tags prior to your move. Additionally, you should consider getting them microchips. These are inexpensive and allow you to find your pets if they get lost. Your pet’s ID tag should have your phone number on them, perhaps even your pet’s name, in the event that they get lost.
